There is nothing better than coming home after a long day, to a clean, fresh-smelling home. It is not always easy to keep up or maintain a clean home. Especially if you have children. I’m a mother and understand there are days where you just want to leave your pile of laundry on the couch, try to find valid excuses to take the day off, or simply put off dinner and order in instead. I have those days ALOT. As a blogger and designer, sometimes I can get overwhelmed with so many things that I found it hard to balance out my personal life.
At least that’s how it used to be until I sat down one day and decided to organize my weeks, days, months, tasks, chores, literally everything. I spent a few days making schedules and tasks for myself and found that these have helped me with so much, including having more spare time to actually keep up with house chores, without being exhausted.
I’m going to share my tips and tricks that I’ve used for the last few years that have helped me stay on track with keeping my living space clean. Keeping a home clean is never easy, especially if you have little ones, like I said, or even pets. It becomes almost impossible. Luckily, over the years I’ve found ways to incorporate children into the cleaning as well. My daughter and I even team up and have cleaning sprees with music blasting. Living in a clean environment not only helps the air quality of your overall living space, but it also helps to declutter your mind. Here is my list of things that help me keep my home clean.
Setting a Schedule
Making a cleaning routine has become something so helpful for me. I’ve set some time aside every month to tackle my schedule for cleaning and other personal things. This has helped me tremendously and it has helped take a load off my shoulders. This is also a great way that could help you feel less overwhelmed throughout the week by knowing what is coming up and what you need to prepare for since it’s so easy to remember everything with an agenda. There are no rules for how you create your schedule, as long as you’re able to make it work for your life.
For example, I’ve set Monday’s for dusting as Monday’s are always busy for me, coming out of the weekend. I divide my little chores throughout the week so that when the weekend arrives, there isn’t much to do except the usual cooking, moping, etc. It also leaves my weekend available for family excursions or time spent with friends. Setting schedules also help people feel a sense of accomplishment as tasks are being ticked off each day. This can also become a flexible way to keep up with your living space while still making it out to your kiddos’ practices and events! Who wouldn’t like a clean home with plenty of time to spend alongside family and friends?
Keeping up with the little things
Do you ever sit down after cooking dinner, you finish an amazing meal and suddenly you become super lazy? Yes! This happens to me all the time! The easiest way to help make a home look tidy is by keeping the sink area and counters clean and clear of any dirty dishes.
To keep your sink clean, try washing any dishes in the sink, and simply wiping down the counters before getting comfortable and eating dinner. You can even clean as you cook, washing all dishes that you no longer need instead of just throwing them in the sink. This will not only make you feel so much better while enjoying your dinner, as it’ll give you peace of mind but it’ll also help keep your home clean from any odors or critters! Once dinner is done, all you have is your dish and a few other things to quickly clean up!
Routine for the kids
If you have kids, this is for you! Do you ever have to pick up after your kids are all tucked into bed? How does setting a fun cleaning routine for your kids sound? It’s as easy as putting music on 10 mins before bed and cleaning up all their toys before the song is over, make it into a fun little competition. Kids love competition and prizes. You could even give them a sticker to put on a cleaning chart! Every time they clean up after themselves they get a sticker to add! Make sure to always make cleaning fun for them. You can adjust this to your child’s age group.
Floors
This is something big for me and is important to maintain. Especially since I have a daughter and a dog. I like to mop pretty much every day to keep the floors spanking clean. This takes a few minutes every day but you might start seeing such a difference in your living environment and less cleaning in your schedule, trust me.
Floors in a home, are the quickest to get dirty, with food stains, constant traffic, pets, toys, etc. By giving it a quick sweep, vacuum run-through, and picking things up off the floor, you will certainly feel as though the house is cleaner. This will also help with the annoying dust that sticks to your feet and travels throughout the house. If you have a pet that sheds, I’m sure you already practice this often.
Airing out your living space
You’d be surprised what cracking open a window or two around the house can do to your home. This improves the air quality in your home and gives you a fresh start to the day. I’d suggest doing this at least once a week. You’ll certainly feel the difference with such a simple action. Another suggestion is house plants and diffusers. Both work wonders to purify your air and add nice decor pieces to your home. Diffusers with essential oils are not only good for the air but the mind and body as well. Especially lavender.
With these few tips, keeping your house clean and maintaining it, can ease off some stress. Making and staying consistent with my schedule has worked out great for me and can for you too!
