I live by the rule that your home should be your sanctuary. It should be the place you come home every day to relax and unwind. If you don’t feel a sense of happiness walking through your door every day, then I suggest updating any visual aesthetics as they are the easiest thing to tweak (the tension with your roommate is something I cannot help with, unfortunately).
Let me start off on an honest note by saying I am not the best interior designer in the world. I am not very creative and tend to struggle with interior decor. However, I have found that boho-inspired decor is the easiest to work with because it is incredibly versatile.
What inspired this article is my recent move into a new apartment (yay!). After being in a minuscule apartment/bedroom (NYC probs) for the past two years, I found myself so excited to decorate my new bedroom and felt it was fairly easy with the boho-chic decor I purchased. I’m still working on perfecting it, but I incorporated a few things that are key to turning your space into a boho dream. Let’s get into it and don’t forget to tell me your favorite products here!

Accent Walls
The first I implemented at my new apartment was an upgrade to my bedroom walls. As I’m sure my fellow NYC renters know, there very little you can do to your walls without getting a chunk removed from your security deposit at the end of your lease. But sometimes you need to spice it up a little bit. If you’re in the same situation, I suggest you use some temporary wallpaper to create an accent wall. There are SO many cute boho-esque prints you can find, I listed my favorites below. When it comes to any interior design, I recommend starting on the outside (the walls) of your room and work your way in. It’s the easiest way (imo) to create a cute and cohesive room.
Plants
Sometimes boho rooms have a tendency of being a little too neutral. Which is totally fine, if that’s your thing! Personally I like to add a little bit of color to my room and what better way to do it than with some plants? Especially with fake plants. I know, I know they’re definitely not as joyful and happy as real plants. But if you don’t have the time to maintain a bunch of living plants or you simply have a black thumb, then fake plants are perfect for you. I’ve listed some of my favorites below.
My favorite part about fake plants is that you can put them anywhere in your apartment, even places that are dark and don’t get a ton of light *duh*. So fill your apartment up with these bad boys!
Rattan
“What the f is rattan?” was the question of the century when I was decorating my new bedroom. I knew what it was visually but not what it actually was made out of. According to The Spruce, rattan is a type of climbing vine-like palm that is found throughout the jungles of Asia, Malaysia, and China. It’s a very common material used for making furniture due to its ability to morph into basically whatever you want. I personally love rattan because it adds a slightly rustic vibe to the area where it resides. See below for a few of my favorite ways it can be used. My personal fave is the candle lanterns, freakin’ adorable.
Throws & Pillows
I find that throws and pillows can either make or break a space. If they’re too extra, they’ll take attention from the rest of the room and if they’re not extra enough then they are just plain boring and who tf wants that? The best way to use throws and pillows throughout a boho space is to add a pop of color or texture to the area. Color is important no matter the vibe, but various textures are key when turning your home into a boho dream. Don’t be afraid to mix colors, prints, and textures. Just have fun with it! See below for the best throws and pillows for any boho space (peep the *witchy* one). I also have a slightly unhealthy obsession with mustard yellow, as you can see.
Macrame
Next, we have macrame, which I know is beyond obvious when it comes to boho decor. But what I didn’t know is how many different design varieties of macrame there are. I always thought it was a pretty standard wall design, but I was clearly mistaken! There are so many forms of macrame that come in many beautiful designs. And the best thing about macrame is that it’s so versatile that you can pretty much put it anywhere you want. Check out the coolest ones below! Also, pro tip. You can make one if you’re feeling crafty (can’t relate). Take a look at these ones on Amazon!
Gold Tones
I’m such a sucker for gold. Not only is it a common element throughout my bedroom but it is in my wardrobe as well! It’s my favorite accent color to put in any space. If you’re looking for a way to modernize your boho space, then gold is for you. It’s sleek and will help balance your boho space with a modern twist. However, it’s important to use it in small doses because you don’t want to overwhelm your room with a bunch of gold items! I mean, unless you do. You do you boo. The items I listed below are perfect for adding a little touch of gold to your space.
Wall Decor
Last but not least we have wall decor! My favorite area to decorate, hands DOWN, is wall space. As I mentioned in the first point, an accent wall is a great way to spice up your room. But if you can’t put wallpaper up for whatever reason or if you simply have more wall space to decorate, I highly recommend wall decor! The best thing about this type of decor is that it doesn’t take up any space. So if you live in a teeny tiny apartment I encourage you to take advantage of your walls! What I listed below is perfect for any space.
You basically put together my dream space with these adorable decor items. When I moved into my townhome with my husband, I was so glad we both had the same vision for our space: modern bohemian. So, not quite as neutral, but still those chill vibes. We’ve got lots of color with the rattan and macrame touches, but with dark furniture rather than primarily white or light wood. And it’s been so fun. The next place we move, I definitely want to lighten things up a bit, and you’re giving me great ideas!
