In today’s society, it is more important than ever to purchase clothing that is sustainable. The clothes we wear are one of the main contributors to environmental stressors and should be purchased with intention and care. Fortunately, many fashionnbrands have taken a step in the right direction by practicing sustainability.
One of the most important ways to practice sustainability is to stop overconsuming. This means avoiding buying new clothes every day, week, or month and instead, purchasing high-quality and sustainable basics that will last you for years to come.
In this article, you will learn about eight different brands that each offer sustainable basics for those who want to make sustainability a part of their wardrobe and lifestyle.

What Makes A Fashion Brand Sustainable?
What makes a fashion brand sustainable? It might seem like a simple question, but there are many different aspects to consider. In order for clothing to be considered environmentally and socially responsible, the company must practice and provide full transparency in its business practices. This includes all of the materials used during production as well as how they treat their workers and animals. They also need to have a goal to reduce waste and pollution.
I highly recommend carefully consider the brands you buy from in order to make an impact on this planet we call home. All it takes is one small change to start making a difference! Pick up some sustainable basics that are just as stylish as any other piece of clothing, but without all of the unethical treatment that typical fast fashion brands come with.
What Is Considered A Basic Item?
Any clothing that is not trendy, such as jeans or plain, neutral t-shirts, is considered a basic item. If you invest in sustainable basic items that are high quality, they will last for years to come without any wear in quality due to the sturdy nature of their design!
So basically anything you see trending on Instagram, TikTok, or any social media is likely not a basic item, so keep that in mind when you see a neon pink cheetah print top or a pair of bedazzled prints taking over the internet. They may be cute, but a few weeks or months down the road I guarantee they’ll be considered old news.

Able
Able is one of my favorite fashion companies for sustainable basics. They are incredibly transparent about their commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
One of my favorite parts about Able is the role their vendors play when it comes to their sustainability mission. They will incorporate recycled packaging during shipping based on what is available in their community, such as recyclable plastic inserts and discarded newspapers. Plus, all of Able’s mailers are recycled, and they repurpose shipping boxes for storage at our headquarters. They are also currently in the process of moving from shipping in poly bags to cloth dust bags with a handle that is biodegradable when disposed of properly.
Able uses all-natural fibers in all of its materials. For example, in fall 2020, they launched sweaters made of 100% organic cotton. The vendor that manufactures the material is a business with zero-waste production methods and GOTS certified, which goes to show Able values every step of their products’ production cycle.
