5 Benefits Of Moisturizing Your Face + My Go-To Moisturizers

Ever since I was a young teenager, my mom has encouraged me to moisturize my face. Many years later, I’m in my mid 20’s and it’s been a part of my skincare routine ever since. I thank my mom for introducing me to this simple, yet effective tool to prevent a number of things including aging, dryness, and acne. Plus, my mom looks amazing for her age so I’m going to take her word for it that moisturizing is effective.

They are simply my own opinions based on my personal experience and what I’ve learned throughout the years. I also conducted research on the American Academy of Dermatology, so shout out to them for being an awesome credible source for this article.
1. Prevents Sun Damage
Probably the most important benefit of moisturizing your skin is sun damage prevention. This will only work if you use moisturizers with SPF 30+ in them. According to the American Cancer Society, you should always use SPF 30 or higher.
Sun damage can result in many things that aren’t ideal, some more than others. First, it can speed up aging. It can also increase your likelihood of skin cancer. That’s why it’s SO crucial to wear SPF 30+ on your face and your entire body if you are going to be in the sun.
It does not matter how sunny or warm is it outside. If it’s daytime and the sun is in the sky, you will be exposed to harmful rays, which is not good at all. I highly encourage you to apply SPF moisturizer both in the morning and throughout the day as you are in and out of the sun.
2. Slows Down Signs Of Aging
First, I want to say that aging is not something to be ashamed of. We live in a society where people, especially women, are shamed for aging when in reality, aging is a gift. We should all feel grateful for the wrinkles and lines because it means we’ve smiled and laughed. And that’s the truth.
However, I do understand that not everyone feels this way and social pressures will not disappear overnight. With that being said, moisturizing does slow down signs of aging. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it traps water in your skin which helps give you a more youthful appearance. It’s definitely an easy way to help minimize and prevent wrinkles and lines when continuously applied.
3. Helps Minimize Dryness
If you’re anything like me, you know the struggles of having dry skin. I have combination skin meaning some parts of my face are extremely oily and other areas are super dry. It gets even worse in the winter and that’s why I’m so proactive about making sure I’m constantly moisturizing my skin.
By moisturizing your dry skin, you help repair any cracks, wrinkles, or fine lines that appear more notable with dry, flakey skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you moisturize your skin immediately after washing, whether that’s taking a shower or just washing your hands. I know this article is meant to be for benefits of moisturizing your face, but it’s important to moisturize your whole body too!
4. Reduces Appearance Of Acne
Another skin struggle I deal with to this day is acne. I’m on two prescription creams for my acne which has helped keep it at bay, but I still get the occasional pimple(s). This goes hand in hand with my previous point regarding dryness.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, when you have dry skin, your body starts to overcompensate by producing more oil. This, as a result, clogs your pores and can cause acne. The same is true for oily skin, which can also clog your pores and result in the same issue. With the right moisturizers, you can prevent this type of irritation which will lower the chances of breaking out. This is also why it’s important to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer, which I will touch on further shortly.
Also, I’m on the medications clindamycin and tretinoin for my acne. Tretinoin makes your skin EXTREMELY dry, so it’s important to use moisturizers as a buffer, FYI. If you struggle with acne, I recommend talking to your dermatologist about these medications.
5. Helps Makeup Application
Lastly, one of the best benefits of moisturizing your face is it helps with makeup application! According to Garnier, it helps your foundation, concealer, and any other face makeup product apply more evenly and smoothly.
I can attest to this, especially when it comes to concealer. I don’t wear foundation but I do use concealer under my eyes where I have a lot of dryness. When I make sure to moisturizer my under eyes, my makeup goes on much smoother.
My favorite concealer at the moment is the Glossier Stretch Concealer which you can read all about here! It’s the perfect natural-looking concealer and I couldn’t recommend it enough.
My Go-To Moisturizers
Now that you know all the amazing benefits of moisturizing your face, let’s dive into my favorite go-to moisturizers.
For The Morning
For the morning, I use the CereVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30+. I use this every morning after I wash my face and I will try to apply it one more time throughout the day, especially if I’m going outside.
I apply this moisturizer to my face and neck in an upward motion (because, ya know, gravity). It is oil-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and is lightweight. I’ve been using this moisturizer for years and will likely never switch to anything else.
For The Evening
For the evening, I use this CereVe Moisturizing Cream with hyaluronic acid and ceramides. This moisturizer is great, I only wish it came in a pump because jars can be super unsanitary.
Before dipping your fingers into a jar, I recommend making sure your hands are washed and I also recommend using these mini spatulas. I suggest separating them in “clean” and “dirty” jars and then simply washing them so they’re reusable. Great for your wallet and the planet!
For The Body
If you’re looking for a great body moisturizer, I highly recommend this Eucerin body lotion with SPF 30+. I was on the hunt for a body moisturizer that has SPF in it that didn’t make me feel greasy and that didn’t leave a white cast. This one is perfect and I always make sure to put it on my hands, chest, and any other part of my body that is being exposed to the sun.
Let’s Wrap It Up
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all about the best benefits of moisturizing your face! If you aren’t moisturizing already, I highly recommend you get started with one of the moisturizers I mentioned above.
Thank you for reading, as always. The growth I’ve experienced with my blog has been incredible and it’s all because of you.
